WHAT IS CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY?
When the nerves of the cervical vertebrae at the base of the skull are compressed, the patient develops a condition that is known as “cervical radiculopathy.” The condition may cause discomfort and other symptoms in the arms, shoulders and other parts of the upper body.
The causes of cervical radiculopathy include a ruptured disc, degenerative conditions, arthritis and trauma. Patients with the condition may experience symptoms in the arms, neck, chest, upper back or shoulders. In addition to discomfort, patients may have difficulty with coordination, as well as numbness, weakness and tingling, especially in the hands and fingers.
HOW IS CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY TREATED?
Cervical radiculopathy may be treated with Calmare® Therapy, a non-narcotic, non-invasive medical procedure for the treatment of chronic pain. For more information about Calmare® Therapy, please click here.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR TREATMENT?
Patients who are in good general health and have been diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy may be good candidates for treatment. During your examination, your physician asks you questions about your medical history, symptoms and the severity of your symptoms. You may undergo additional tests, such as nerve conduction tests, MRI or x-rays.
After your diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy, your physician discusses your treatment options and helps you make an informed decision.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS?
The extent of your recovery for cervical radiculopathy depends on the extent of your symptoms, including how long you have lived with the condition. Your physician may recommend physical therapy as part of your recovery. Following your physician’s recommendation for rest, limitations to your activities and rehabilitation helps you recover faster and improves your long-term prognosis.
Patients are under medical management during the recovery phase with an emphasis on minimizing and reducing pharmaceutical usage.
