What is a herniated disc?
Herniated discs occur when one of the discs in the spine bulges out of place. Each spinal disc has its own natural space in which it can move freely. When that disc moves out of this space, it is considered to be herniated. Unlike bulging discs, however, herniated discs are normally caused by age or some type of trauma, after which they immediately bulge.
The majority of herniated discs are found in the lumbar, or lower, portion of the spine. That is why when performing activities such as lifting heavy objects; you should always wear a back brace or lifting strap.
Symptoms of a herniated disc include localized pain, tingling, muscle weakness, numbness in your back or legs, slow reflexes, and sciatica.
How are herniated discs treated?
The condition may be treated with Calmare® Therapy, a non-narcotic, non-invasive medical procedure for the treatment of chronic pain. For more information about Calmare® Therapy, please click here.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
People who are otherwise healthy and who begin to experience symptoms of a herniated disc may be good candidates. Upon evaluation, your physician will discuss all of the treatment options available to you to determine how to best suit your needs.
What is the recovery process?
Recovery from a herniated disc takes time. Bed rest on a firm mattress is recommended for up to two weeks. Lying on your stomach is not recommended, and lying flat is usually not necessary unless it makes you more comfortable.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables while on bed rest, as prolonged periods in bed can slow down intestinal function, thus causing constipation. You can apply ice to decrease swelling and reduce pain. Many patients practice breathing deeply from their diaphragm to reduce stress on your back and as a means to relax.
When you begin feeling better, practice getting out of bed by first lying on your side and then pushing yourself up. Sit in chairs that are straight with your feet flat on the floor. This position will help you when it is time to get up.
Patients are under medical management during the recovery phase with an emphasis on minimizing and reducing pharmaceutical usage.
