Neuropathy in Staten Island, NY

Calmare Pain Relief Solutions offers treatment for neuropathy to the residents of Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the surrounding communities in New York.

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a group of disorders that occur when nerves of the peripheral nervous system – the part of the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord – are damaged. The condition most often causes pain and numbness in the hands and feet and can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic disorders, exposure to toxins, and diabetes.

Neuropathy can affect the nerves that control muscle movement and those that detect sensations such as temperature or pain. It also can affect organs such as the heart, blood vessels, bladder, or intestines.
About 20 million people in the United States suffer from neuropathy, and more than half of diabetes patients have the disease.

How is neuropathy treated?

The condition may be treated with Calmare® Therapy, a non-narcotic, non-invasive medical procedure for the treatment of chronic pain. For more information about Calmare® Therapy, please click here.

Who is a candidate for treatment?

Because neuropathy is not one single disease, it can often be difficult to diagnose. Your doctor will ask you for a complete medical history and conduct physical and neurological examinations of tendon reflexes, muscle strength and tone, and your ability to feel sensations. Many times electro-diagnostic testing such as EMG/NCV studies are needed to determine the location of the problem and the extent of the nerve damage.

What is the recovery process?

Your recovery will depend largely on the treatment plan your doctor has advised for you. There are a number of ways you can speed the healing process, including following any exercise plan that your doctor has prescribed which will control blood sugar levels and reduce pain. Also, if you have diabetes, check your feet regularly and watch for blisters, cuts, bruises, or anything out of the ordinary. Maintain a healthy diet and if you smoke, you should consider quitting.

Patients are under medical management during the recovery phase with an emphasis on minimizing and reducing pharmaceutical usage.
