What is shingles (post herpetic neuropathy)?
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. It usually appears in a band or a small area on one side of the face or body. The condition is most common in older adults and people who have weakened immune systems due to stress, injury, or medications. Most people who get shingles will not get it again and will get better.
Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in the body. After the chickenpox, the shingles virus remains dormant and in some people may remain that way forever. In others, however, the virus awakens and causes the rash.
Shingles is not contagious, although there is a chance that a person with a shingles rash may spread it to another person who has not yet had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine.
Symptoms of shingles include sensitivity to light or a headache. It also may feel like the flu but without a fever. Symptoms may progress to itching, tingling, or pain in certain areas, where a rash may develop. The rash turns into blisters, which fill with fluid and crust. It also is possible to feel dizzy and weak or to experience a long-term rash on the face and changes in vision and in mental clarity.
How is shingles (post herpetic neuropathy) treated?
The condition may be treated with Calmare® Therapy, a non-narcotic, non-invasive medical procedure for the treatment of chronic pain. For more information about Calmare® Therapy, please click here.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
If you think you have shingles, you should see the doctor right away as the sooner it is treated, the better the results. If you experience intense pain for longer than one month after your skin heals, see your doctor ASAP.
What is the recovery process?
Trying to do too much too soon could only set you back further.
Basic rules for recovering from shingles include rest, a good diet, drinking plenty of fluids and only as much physical activity as you feel comfortable doing.
Patients are under medical management during the recovery phase with an emphasis on minimizing and reducing pharmaceutical usage.
